Master Chinese Go Fundamentals

Go (Weiqi) distills two millennia of tactical balance. This guide keeps your dojo aligned: crisp principles, clean moves, and clarity from fuseki to yose.

01

The Board

Go unfolds on a 19×19 grid. New players can begin on 9×9 or 13×13 boards to focus on key patterns.

02

The Stones

Black opens play, White responds. Stones stay fixed once placed unless they are captured.

03

Placing Stones

Moves land on line intersections, not inside squares. Shape and spacing define territory lines.

04

Liberties

Each stone needs an adjacent empty point to breathe. Connected stones share their liberties.

05

Capture

Remove opposing stones when their liberties disappear. Timing captures turns balance instantly.

06

Ko Rule

You cannot recreate the previous position on the very next move. The loop resets after playing elsewhere.

07

Territory

Secure empty points fully surrounded by your stones. Every intersection you hold adds to your lead.

08

Chinese Scoring

Count stones plus surrounded points. White receives 7.5 komi to offset Black's first-move tempo.

09

Game End

Both players pass when territory is settled. Review captures, confirm points, and record the result.

Perspective

Chinese vs Japanese Rules

Both systems honor the same board craft. Chinese scoring counts stones on the board, while Japanese scoring focuses strictly on territory.

CNChinese Rules

  • Area scoring: stones plus surrounded intersections.
  • Captured stones return to the board before counting.
  • Standard komi grants White 7.5 points.
  • Simple, fast counting for club-level events.

JPJapanese Rules

  • Territory scoring only; stones on board are neutral.
  • Prisoners stay off-board and count as points.
  • Traditional komi adds 6.5 points to White.
  • Detailed endgame nuances influence counting.
"The rules of Go are so elegant, organic, and rigorously logical that if intelligent life forms exist elsewhere in the universe, they almost certainly play Go."

— Edward Lasker
